One of the most charming cities in Europe, Amsterdam is visited for many reasons either on a lovers getaway strolling down the many canals or a party weekend including a few coffee shop visits. There is plenty to visit and do, but if you’re limited with time it’s good to have a list offering some of the best Things to do in Amsterdam.
1. Walking the canals
…or taking a boat through them is must! Starting in the Jordaan neighborhood is a great start, and it’s only a short walking distance from the main train station. You can just follow your eyes getting lost in Amsterdam’s beauty or take a Eating Amsterdam walking tour for some authentic dutch specialties to go alongside your sightseeing.
2. Going out at night is also a must!
In this city of sin in Europe, there is the red light district worth exploring to see the dim lighted ladies working their trade or great nightclubs in Rembrandtplein and Leidseplein that will keep you dancing well past the sun rising. In case you’d like to just go for a beer there are many local brewed beers worth trying at a one of the many cozy bars.
3. Rent a bike
Rent a bike and tour Amsterdam like the locals allowing you to see more of the city, like De Pijp. A hip neighborhood offering ethnic food options and the largest outdoor market in Amsterdam, Albert Cuypmarkt. Open Monday through Saturday 9am – 5pm. Do be weary of the city’s biking rules and don’t get offended if they ring their bell at you. Biking is taken very seriously as driving on a road is in Amsterdam.
4. Visit the Anne Frank house
…or one of the more than 50 museums offered. Rijksmuseum and the Rembrandt House exhibit some of the best collections from the Dutch Golden Age.
5. Check out a concert
Concertgebouw is home to the Royal Orchestra and is regarded as a Dutch national treasure. Offering some of the best acoustic anywhere in the world. You are sure to catch an amazing live performance.
6. In case a movie is more your style, catch one at Tuschinski.
Amsterdam’s most famous movie theater, designed in a combination of compelling and eye-catching architectural styles on the outside, and is elegant as it is eclectic inside.
7. Indulge in one of the many tapas restaurants
These restaurants offered in Amsterdam will give you a Spanish flare. Either you go to Pata Negra 2 with multiple locations throughout city or Bar Catala. You and your friends will be filled with many light bites.
8. Visit one of the many fresh food markets
These make for a delicious lunch and great photo opportunities. There are Ten Katemarkt, De Hallen, Albert Cuypmarkt, Dappermarkt, and Waterlooplein Market to choose from all open Monday – Saturday.
9. After a long day there is nothing more relaxing than a glass of wine
Check out one of Amsterdam’s cozy borrelhapjes. Worth visiting are: Glou Glou, Vyne, Boelen & Boelen, or diVino.
10. Explore the De Pijp neighborhood
This place is a melting pot of cultures and nationalities. Known for its fantastic cafés, restaurants, coffee shops and bars.
