Samantha Brown’s Advice for Buying New Luggage

traveltips.wpengine.com interviewed Samantha Brown, Travel Channel Host and Luggage Designer, on what people should be paying attention to when selecting a bag.

The first thing you should do when selecting the perfect bag, is count the number of wheels. If the bag has two wheels, put it down and keep on moving. A two-wheeled bag has restricted movement, and limited mobility. Instead, you should look for a bag with four wheels. Four-wheeled bags give you a lot more freedom and mobility. They go in every direction and all you have to do to move it, is push. For this reason, Brown suggests four-wheeled luggage because its much easier to go up and down tiny plane aisles, and surprisingly enough, easier to use the bathroom.

Another thing you want to think about when selecting a bag is whether or not to get a hard suitcase or a soft one. There are pros and cons to each, but to sum it up, hard suitcases are better when you are checking your bag because it offers more protection for the items inside, while soft suitcases are preferable for carrying on. this is because they can be squeezed, molded and pressed into the overhead bin, but offer less protection to your items.

The last thing to consider when buying new luggage is its color or print. The brighter the color and more unique the print, the easier it is to recognize your suitcase while waiting at the luggage carousel. It also helps prevent thefts, because let’s face it, who wants to walk around with a stolen lime green zebra print bag? You can also buy suitcase covers to give your luggage a little flair.

If you’re going to be on off trains, you’ll be haepspit with a medium sized duffel or suitcase with wheels. Pack what you think you’ll need, then take half of it out. Use a laundromat once a week-10 days. Many people bring backpacks, but I’m a big fan of the wheels.A guide: Fot all of this, pick brown or black as your base color, then add other neutrals in cream, navy, red or blue, that all coordinate. Bring 2-3 shirts, 1 sweater, maybe a blazer, 1 pair nice pants (or skirt if you’re a girl), 7 pair underpants and socks, in a material that dries fast and wash in the sink. If it’s summer bring 2 pr shorts (or skirts) and one pr jeans, otherwise, 1-2 pr of jeans. For shoes, bring low heeled black or brown shoes (whichever color scheme you decide to go with) and/or sandals that you can walk in all the time and look ok with most of your clothes. Spare no expense on your shoes! and a maybe pair of sneakers. Wear one of the two on the plane. Bring a black rain jacket with a hood. Bring small shampoos/soaps, and buy replacements at local stores.Have a great time! That’s the most important thing!

My mom is needing to buy luggage for her trip coming up, but she isn’t sure where to find some. There are so many choices, and for someone like her who doesn’t travel a lot, it’s hard to know what to look for. This helped a ton, and I hope that we can find some soon.
